Values driven leadership is on trend. For Christian women leaders and entrepreneurs this means developing the right leadership skills is crucial.
Over the past seven years, as I have read and followed the developments, trends and directions of business and politics in the western world. increasingly, I have been left with just one question - where are all the Christians?
Afterall, aren't we meant to be the salt and light of this world? Aren't we meant to be pushing back on the darkness, calling out immoral ways and standing up for the truth no matter what the cost?
Yet, in many ways the Christian voice in business and society is deafeningly silent.
We busy ourselves with Sunday services, volunteering in all manner of Church activities - without doubt of enormous value to building up the body - yet what about our calling? You know, the one where we are to be in the world but not of it. That's right, the calling where we ARE the salt and light of this world - even in the workplace!
Sure, there are an increasing number of Christian small businesses and individual entrepreneurs forging their way as successful enterprises. Yet, they largely continue to operate in the same 'bubble' of safety - serving other Christians but trying to make it in the world, in worldly ways.
I've often been left wondering why don't we see these businesses challenging mainstream business views and operations. Why are't we at the forefront of making business more balanced and accommodating to women's responsibilities? Why aren't we forging the way on innovation and business practices in AI that are moral and bound by good character, best practice and leading edge operations? Where are the Christian versions of Elon Musk and Tucker Carlson in the main stream calling out for caution, calling out immoral practices and pointing the way toward truth?
Instead, I hear Christian voices urging leaders and business owners to stay in step with AI and not get left behind. I witness Christian leaders compromising on the truth in the workplace and being silent on the encroachment of women's hard fought and won spaces.
I can't help but wonder, if we have forgotten our calling in these arenas - to be called out from this world and to stand as the salt that halts moral decay and the light that pushes back the darkness of this world?
After being made redundant in 2016, I have been on somewhat of a journey - an adventure of sorts, that involved nothing short of the complete demolition of my position and all I knew about leadership. Thankfully, it also involved the rebuilding of my understanding and knowledge and repositioning of myself as a woman of God and as a business woman. It has been an amazing journey and not taken lightly.
At the same time, I witnessed a transformation in the business world and society that has almost rendered it unrecognisable. Lockdowns resulting in remote working and redundancy has given impetus to a steady increase in the participation of women in leadership and business over the past few years. The Women in the Workplace 2023 report by McKinsey cited flexible work arrangements as a primary contributor to the increase in women's ambitions in the workplace. Rather uniquely, this gave women greater scope and opportunity to successfully and more easily juggle childcare and home responsibilities with work. Rather unexpectedly, but perhaps naturally this lead to an increase in a woman's confidence to competently and successfully fulfil her work role. The result in 2024 is an increased confidence that has contributed to a rise women's ambitions to step up into leadership roles and to stay in leadership roles.1
In addition to this, business thought leaders championed servant leadership not least because it supported the much needed pathway to connect with people following the disconnect of remote working. Now in 2024, purpose driven leadership is taking a front row seat in leadership trends which means there is an even greater emphasis on people and aligning organisational goals with a broader sense of purpose in the work of the business and it's social impact.2
While these developments may have opened up the business world and created a more fertile environment for female leaders and entrepreneurs, other developments are perhaps a little more concerning.
Identity politics has pushed the boundaries of science and common sense rationale of what it means to be a woman. Misinformation, disinformation and malformation have contributed to the distortion of truth and actively promotes distrust at all levels. Diversity, inclusion and equity policies have rather ironically, at times, resulted in inequity. Censorship of views contrary to mainstream media has caused divisions amongst colleagues, friends and families. At best these developments have sidelined many conservative thinkers and Christians, relegating them to passive participants. At worst, individuals have been branded as far right conspiracy theorists and quite simply silenced or 'cancelled'. Little wonder then, so many Christians discard their faith at the office door.
Yet, it is this unique combination of events which I believe provides the perfect opportunity for Christian women (and men) to actively position themselves as transformational leaders and entrepreneurs and bring Christian values and truth directly into the workplace. Surely now more than ever, the world needs us to be the salt and light we are!
